How to Get Your Kids to Eat Fish

Are you guilty of child abuse? With all the evidence supporting the healthy benefits of eating fish, it seems almost like abuse not to feed your children fish on a regular basis.

Okay, maybe you don’t like fish. But you’re an adult. You’re old enough to weigh the consequences of your decision (a pain free future or crippling arthritis – choose). But a child doesn’t have the capacity to make this choice. And, knowing all the complications that could arise, it’s inconsiderate on our part to make it for them.

Enough of the guilt trip. Let’s say for a moment that you’re willing to consider the possibility of doing something about the situation. How would you go about getting your kids to eat fish?

With four children of my own, I’ve learned through personal experience that kids learn in three ways -example, example and example. They tend to do what they see us doing (that is, until they become teenagers).

So, while they’re still young, the best thing you can do is to start eating fish yourself. (You probably already knew where this was going.) If you don’t like the fishy taste then you’re not buying fresh fish, not preparing it properly or you haven’t developed the taste yet. These things are easy to fix. Here’s how.

Fresh fish seldom tastes “fishy” – that is, in the traditional sense that people complain about. I mean, fish is fish and it doesn’t taste like chicken, but it doesn’t have to taste “fishy” either. Buy the freshest fish you can find and serve it as soon as possible.

Get yourself a fish cookbook and try various recipes until you find several your family really enjoys and then just stick with those.

Many people find that it’s easier to develop a taste for fish when you start with mild tasting fish first. Although fish like salmon have the highest omega 3 fatty acids, they also have the strongest flavor. Start eating white fish like grouper or sea bass and gradually work your way up to salmon. I promise it’ll go a lot easier for you and your family.

Introducing your children to fish as early as you can also makes a difference. We started giving our kids fish oil on a spoon when they were just 6 months old. They were soon chewing the capsules (by their own choice) and now fish is one of their favorite foods. When we go out to eat, the chances are 8 out of 10 that they’ll order fish.

Okay, so your kids are older and they’ve already developed a taste for TV dinners, pot pies and pizza. No problem. That is if you’re willing to use tough love. Basically you can follow some of the same suggestions I’ve given and make sure there are no other choices for dinner. Be firm. They’ll eat when they get hungry enough.

In order to help your children live a long happy healthy life, give these suggestions a try. Research shows that fish also improves a child’s behavior and mood, so there are added benefits for you too. Believe me, you’ll be glad you taught your kids to eat fish. And maybe some day they’ll even thank you for it!

It all started in about the late 1970’s, several studies that investigated certain aspects of a population revealed that the Inuit people, a people whose diet consisted largely of fish, had a much lower incidence of heart attack.

For reasons that are not specifically known, fish oil, according to the author of one study titled “From Inuit to implementation: omega-3 fatty acids come of age,” “seems to be able to stabilize myocardial membranes electrically, resulting in reduced susceptibility to ventricular dysrhythmias, thereby reducing the risk of sudden death.” So, the omega-3’s from fish oil stabilize the electrical impulses that cause the heart to beat and this reduces the risk of a heart attack. Another theory suggests that fish oils help to navigate cholesterol levels to healthier levels therefore causing an indirect effect on the implications of heart disease. Even more, another theory says that fish oils have an antithrombotic effect, which means that they cause less blood clots to form within the body – along the same lines as this, it is known that fish oil does have anti-inflammatory effects.

In the most famous study, known as the GISSI, 11,324 patients that had survived a recent heart attack less than 3 months ago were monitored and shown to have, after 3.5 years, a 45% decrease in risk of sudden death due to cardiac reasons and a reduction of 20% in all-cause death in the group that was assigned an omega-3 supplement of 850 mg per day. In fact, the authors of this study noted that the effect of omega-3s became evident at the 4 month mark.

In another study, by Harper CR and Jacobson TA at the Emory University of Medicine, the authors investigated six trials/studies that tested the effects fish oil. The authors found that the supplementation of fish oil caused a statistically significant reduction in the amount of heart attacks that occurred that were fatal. However, they also found that the number of nonfatal heart attacks was not statistically significantly reduced. The study was titled “Usefulness of omega-3 fatty acids and the prevention of coronary heart disease.”

So, exercise, eat right, and take your fish oils and you’re heart will love you in addition to allowing you to live longer. Although many people may simply “not worry about the long run” as to how their life goes – not only can fish oil increase your lifespan – it can also increase the quality of your life – more on that in another article.

Most of us think that all fats are bad for your health, but in fact there are actually good fats out there. All natural fats are mixed with various kinds of fatty acids. These fatty acids are made up of both short and long chain carbon atoms. These short and long chain atoms look like arms reaching out. If the carbon atoms are bound with hydrogen the fatty acid is considered saturated. (3,4) Long carbon chains that are double bonded to other carbon atom chains are considered unsaturated. Fatty acid chains have at least two or more double bonds are called polyunsaturated. Polyunsaturated fatty acids are classified as linoleic acid when there is a double bond at the sixth carbon atom from the omega end. When this happens the polyunsaturated fatty acid is called an omega-6 fatty acid. (4,5) Linolenic acid has a double bond at the third carbon atom from the omega end and this is called omega 3 fatty acid. Both linoleic and linolenic acid are needed to sustain life. Even though some fatty acids can be manufactured by the body, omega 3 and omega 6 can not be manufactured and must be consumed in our diets.

Linoleic acid is very abundant in American diets, found in commercial baked goods, prepared foods, vegetable oils, and margarine. What most Americans lack is omega 3.

Fish oil contains eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA) and docosahexaenoic acid (DHA), two components of fish oil derived from linolenic acid. Both EPA and DHA have impressive health benefits. For starters, fatty acids are important for healthy cell membranes. Cell membranes control what enters and exits the cells in our body and protect the cell from danger. Depending on our diets (American diets are high in saturated fats), our cells can be comprised of mostly fatty acids saturated with hydrogen. Saturated fatty acids membranes are usually packed closely together with other cell membranes and becomes rigid and stiff.

If your diet consists of a lot of polyunsaturated fatty acids, your cell membranes will be more flexible and curved in structure and have a more elastic nature. This is because polyunsaturated fatty acids have double bonds between carbon atoms and the carbon atom chains have lots of space between them. When a cell membrane is more flexible it is healthier than the stiff and rigid saturated fatty membrane.

Omega 3 fish oil has been studied in depth in the area of heart disease. With impressive results fish oil has shown to lower the risk of heart attack and reduce blood pressure. One recent study examined men who lived in Finland. These men consumed a fairly high level of EPA and DHA in there diet and experienced a 44% reduction in risk of acute heart attacks compared to men who consumed very little EPA and DHA.

Another study of blood pressure and omega 3 fish oil determined that supplementation with EPA and DHA helped individuals with hypertension. Blood pressure dropped by 6 points during the experiment. (6)

Omega 3 fish oil has shown to reduce other risk factors such as lowering serum triglyceride levels and total cholesterol levels which are both heart attack risk factors. A study showed that postmenopausal women can reduce there risk of heart attack by 27% when taking omega-3 fish oil. (7,8)

EPA and DHA in fish oil can also combat some diseases such as asthma, multiple sclerosis, systemic lupus erythematosus, and cancer. Studies have shown that omega 3 fatty acids can help improve asthma in children and increase survival rate in cancer patients. (9,10) Fish oil can also fill nutritional gaps and increase weight in cancer patients. Low levels of DHA have been linked to depression; people who have supplemented omega 3 fish oil have noticed an increase in mood and relief from symptoms of depression. Omega 3 fish oil may even help with mental illnesses like bipolar disorders. One study suggests that fish oil can help with rheumatoid arthritis. (11)

With all these benefits you might be considering fish at every meal. Not all species of fish have high levels of EPA and DHA. Anchovies, Herring, Mackerel, Salmon, Sardines, and Tuna have the highest levels of omega 3 fatty acids per ounce of meat out of any other sea bearing animal.

The people who were initially studied on fish oil were the native Inuit; they consumed more than 4 to 5 grams of EPA each day. That’s equivalent to 1.5 – 3 pounds of fish each day. Even the most avid fish eater might find it hard to eat that much fish each day on a consistent basis.

What benefit will Consuming Flax Seed oil daily do for me?

Flax seed is rich in omega fatty acids, lignans, B vitamins, fiber, protein, magnesium, and many other beneficial nutrients. I’ve been taking flax seeds for about a week and have noticed that my skin, hair, and nails look a lot better. You should take 1-3 tablespoons a day of flax seed oil, or 2-4 tablespoons of cold milled flax seed. Sometimes the amount depends on the specific product you’re using, so check out GNC or a pharmacy, and see what the product’s label says for the serving suggestion.

ETA: Do NOT eat a big bowl of flax seed a day, like J’adore suggested. That will cause diarrhea.
